Synopsis

“A house with a demise in it can never again be purchased or sold by the living. It must be obtained by the phantoms who have remained behind.”

Not long after that executioner opening line, our hero Lily Saylor (Ruth Wilson) drops another sensation when she uncovers that she’ll be dead inside a year. Osgood Perkins’ “I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House” is a climatic interpretation of the spooky house flick that works more with fear and the approaching phantom of death than the conventional tropes that regularly characterize the class. Certainly, there are two or three minutes to make you wheeze, however Perkins is working in a more roundabout, dreamlike way. The entire film happens in the house toward the end of Teacup Road in Braintree, Massachusetts, and this house is spooky.
