This ugly, humorless children movie show from French comic Jamel Debbouze, uses motion capture technology to unsettling result.
This crude CGI motion-capture cartoon marks the directorial debut of French actor, comedian and pop-cultural development Jamel Debbouze (‘Amélie’, ‘Days of Glory’). the actual fact that the central character, sharp-witted monkey peewee Edward, relies on Debbouze and was voiced by him within the French version can do very little to sell the film to British audiences unaware of his celebrity pull.
More problematic, however, is that the visual vogue. The apes have weirdly robot figures – together with breasts on the females and recognizably human faces. It’s onerous to figure out that is creepier: the fur-covered secondary sexual characteristics or the rubbery texture of the motion-capture performers’ ape-faces.
